Grocery Cart Chatter
The New Year is teasing us with Spring like weather in between the Cold Breaths of Winter. One more good shot of Cold air to kill the bugs and I’m ready for Spring. December saw us giving out toys to 640 Children; largest number we have ever served. A BIG Thank-you to ALL Santa’s Elves, could not have made it without you.
For Thanksgiving, thanks to the Masonic Lodge and Cook Tina, Hempstead Theatre, and her crew, we served free dinners to those who either had no family to gather with for the holiday or were not able to cook a Thanksgiving meal. Good food, many blessings and great company was enjoyed by all.
January and February has seen an increase for grocery assistance; at various times 60-75 families have been served at each food give out on Tuesdays and Saturdays. We have an ongoing need for Hygiene Items, tea, coffee and soups for adults and children; PLUS Ensure or a Generic Supplement for our Clients receiving Cancer treatments.
We decided NOT to have a “Spring Fashion Show”. The Dates we had in mind would have interfere with other fundraisers already scheduled by organizations we work with and support. We, at the HOH, have volunteers and supporters that are also active in some of these other groups and we did not want them to have to make a choice as to which events they would attend or support.
We are considering a “Fall/Winter Style Show and Luncheon” as a fundraiser with a Silent Auction. A Fall or Winter event would give us more time to plan and hopefully we could attract some local and/or media personality involvement……… Stay tune for more details………
We are in need of Volunteers to help us sort donated items to get ready for several “Storage Shed Sales and Yard Sales” for fundraisers. We will be holding these over the next 4 months starting the end of February. ALL Sales will take place on a Saturday from 8am – 2 pm; Rain or Shine. Tentative Sale Schedule: Saturday, February 28th, March 14th and 28th, April 11th and 25th and May 9th; watch for further announcements on these and other upcoming events.
With the help of the “Men of Valor”, Prairie View A&M organization, we were able to finally get our outside bench installed. Now our clients have an additional place to sit while waiting to receive their groceries and can enjoy the outdoors when the weather is nice. Thanks Guy’s awesome job!
We have a BEAUTIFUL Wedding Dress for SALE, size Small, that Diane Kempf kindly donated to us. This dress was featured in our “Fashion Show” this past Spring. Pictures and Story will soon be available on our website; www.hohhempstead.org , Facebook Page and in the Hotline Press. If you know of anyone planning a Wedding, please suggest they contact us, 979-826-4445, for a GREAT BUY on a BEAUTIFUL Dress.
HOH Is now part of RSVP Volunteer Program. Seniors, 55 and over, Volunteering at the HOH will be eligible for various discounts and other benefits that they offer. Help is always needed and appreciated in our Thrift Shop, office and Food Pantry. If you speak Spanish, that is an extra Blessing for us and the Clients we serve. Come check us out, 10am-3pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We are located at 716 – 1st Street, on the corner of 1st and FM 1488. Look for the sign with the Grocery Cart. Come join us and see what all the Chatter is about around the House of Help.
Don’t get too carried away by the Spring like weather and put all those plants in the ground. Mother always said no, planting until Easter. Until the Grocery Cart rolls out again, We pray Our Lord Blesses Each of YOU and YOUR FAMILIES.
